26th November - 30th November 2007 with years 8-10 students.
Involve the community
Need to advertise this week for parents and the school community
Create a student team
Gather a group of students who are active and experienced with social networking. Ask them to be mentors for staff.
Some students may want to create a new user account specifically for this activity
Technical preparation
Need to unblock Facebook for this week
Staff supported to create user accounts
Staff create a user account in Facebook with student assistance.
Staff will naturally ask questions to do with the security of their information and privacy (who will be able to see what?)
Students can talk to staff about options for privacy when they create their profile - Who can see my profile? Can I have some people see just the basics? Can I prevent some people from seeing anything at all?
Discuss the pros and cons of using the 'Find Friends' tool - ie allowing a third party (Facebook) access to your email password. Suggest that this is not done.
Staff and students create friendships via Facebook to experience this process
at the end of Facebook week we should make it a rule that we break all of these friendships
have a funeral for these connections at the end of the week
note Danah Boyd's comments about what our culture sees as acceptable vs asian cultures
How do we make sure that no staff member or student who wants to play misses out?
Staff and students join a school based group called something like 'SNW Facebook Week'
